F-35 crews at Ebbing and new homes at Chaffee Crossing

In March 2023 the Air Force picked Ebbing Air National Guard Base, which shares the Fort Smith Regional Airport, as the pilot training center for nations buying the F-35. Planners then expected more than 500 military personnel and about 300 dependent families to arrive over two years.

The jets are now landing. The first Finnish F-35A touched down on January 20, 2026 (KUAF), and the first German one on October 5, 2026; some foreign pilots stay in the River Valley for as long as a year.

Homebuilders moved to meet that demand on former Fort Chaffee land at the city's eastern edge. In 2023 one local builder counted about 500 units in the works at Chaffee Crossing, from planning stages to framing.

Sebastian County has two county seats, Fort Smith and Greenwood, a split into two judicial districts that the Encyclopedia of Arkansas dates to 1861 and that still stands, so county offices keep rooms in both towns.
